Camden Youth MP Zarin Bakhshzaad joined hundreds of members of the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) at a young people's debate in the House of Commons on 28 February.
Zarin spoke during a UKYP motion on political literacy being taught in schools. She spoke in favour of giving young people greater access to political and democratic education. You can see her House of Commons speech here (at 11 mins, 12 secs).
The debate was chaired by Caroline Nokes MP, Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, but Zarin also met House of Commons Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, during her visit (photo above).
Zarin said: "Speaking at the House of Commons on the necessity of increasing political education for young people was an incredible privilege and a wonderful experience. It was also lovely being able to connect and meet with fellow MYPs from across the UK. I look forward to campaigning on our selected issues in the coming year."
The debates on the day included motions to change the voting age for young people in the UK to 16, to increase the national living wage for young people from the age of 16 to match those aged over 22, free travel for all young people, political literacy being taught in schools and about period dignity for girls and young women.
The event was attended by over 300 elected members of the UK Youth Parliament aged 10 to 18, as well as young people from Overseas British Territories and Crown Dependencies.
