On Thursday (18 February), 30 past and current members of Camden Youth Council came together for our first virtual Youth MP election - with Anes Bouzouina being chosen as the borough's new Youth MP.
Andrea Giró-Adeleye and Anya Nedungadi are Camden's new Deputy Youth MPs.
The election was originally due to take place borough-wide in March 2020. However, the first week of voting coincided with the beginning of the national lockdown and the start of a very challenging year for us all.
Due to this uncertainty, the election was postponed until November 2020 and then January 2021. However, continued lockdown and lack of access to schools and youth clubs made traditional voting impossible. After a year of uncertainty, Camden Youth Council and the Youth MP election candidates agreed that a mini-election would take place.
The new Youth MP and Deputy Youth MPs will serve a one-year term, instead of two years, to allow a full election to be held next year when schools and youth clubs are open.
In order for the 2021 election to be bias-free, both past and present Youth Council members were invited to meet all the candidates 'virtually' online. The group heard the candidates' manifestos and the election hopefuls answered important questions on how they would serve the young people of Camden during one of our most challenging years yet.
Included in the group were three former Youth MPs, as well as the outgoing Youth MP Athian Akec and Deputy Youth MP Asma Maloumi.
All of the six 2021 candidates gave powerful speeches and showed their passion for working for the young people.
